T-shirts featuring a “button image for women’s button ups” are becoming increasingly popular, with men’s buttons typically featuring a textured, geometric design while women’s buttons tend to be more subdued.
In an interview with Business Insider, the designer, Ben Dabney, said he chose the image because it was a good fit for his website, but he also wanted it to appeal to women who are more likely to wear buttoned up clothing.
“Women are more inclined to wear a buttoned shirt than a skirt, so it was the perfect fit,” he said.
Dabney says he used to wear his buttons with his jeans and shirt when he was younger, but now he’s got them on his shirts to give his shirts a “classic button up” look.
He also said that he was inspired to design a button-up shirt after noticing how many buttons were on his own shirts.
“It was just such a weird feeling,” he told Business Insider.
“But the fact that I was wearing them on my shirt really helped me understand that buttons are a way to make a statement.”
For the shirt Dabneys chose, he says he created two different buttons to show the difference between men’s and women’s designs.
“You can always change it, but for the most part I like to just keep the same,” he explained.
Dabbney says that he’s also looking forward to using the shirts for other brands.
“I’ve been trying to create a range of button-ups that have buttons on them for years and years,” he added.
“And I think it’s a really cool way to create your own branding.”
